Hello Ladies,
It does not seem possible that we are now in May, and what a lovely Spring it has been weather-wise, although I think the course and our gardens would now benefit from a shower or two (overnight of course ).
There has been sad news since the last newsletter, in the passing of two of our more Senior members – Sheelagh Savage and Myra John , Sheelagh was a long standing member of the Ladies Section taking on the role of Treasurer in her time , she loved her golf and was a great character. The committee has agreed that the monthly medal in October ( her birthday month ) will also be played for the ‘Sheelagh Savage Salver’.
On a happier note we wish a warm welcome to a new lady member who joined us in April – Mrs Caro Dodkin, Caro’s husband has also joined the club so we look forward to them joining us for the mixed matches.
We have now played 4 of our friendly matches with the following results :-
WBGC v St Augustines – Runners Up 1/5 – 1 drawn
WBGC v Chestfield – Runners Up 3/4
WBGC v Whitstable and Seasalter – Runners Up 1/6
WBGC v North Foreland - Away – Runners Up 3/4
Although we do seem to like ‘runners up’ places, visiting clubs have put up some really strong teams, and in our defence, due to holidays and illness, some of our lower handicap players have not been available to play. However, placement aside all four matches were blessed with fine weather and as always it was a pleasure to play with friends old and new from other clubs.
Some good news is that after months of uncertainty, Herne Bay Golf Club will be able to meet its match commitments this year, and we look forward to both our Ladies and Mixed matches this Summer.
Our first mixed match was against St Augustine’s .Again we were blessed with fine weather, and had a good field of 10 x 4 balls. At the last minute a St A’s player did not turn up, so one of our junior members ‘young Jack’ as he is known stood in and played for St A’s. On reflection, although charitable, this did us no favours as he won the game for them on the 18t , and guess what, yes, we were runners-up yet again/ 4/5 + 1 drawn.
On 7 May we had the first of the year’s mixed club matches with an excellent entry of 32 players.
With fine weather on our side we all enjoyed a very nice afternoon’s golf,.The winners were:-
1st – Julie Ellis and Peter James
2nd – Pat and Tony Taplin
3rd – Babs Baker and Steven Fox.
All winners received vouchers from the Pro-Shop.
Ladies, both our friendly and mixed matches are great fun, you do not have to have a low handicap to take part. We do need more ladies as we have partners ready and waiting !!!! Why not sign up for the next one on the 28th May?
This year seems to be rushing by. Here is a reminder of up-coming events:-
After the Medal game, a member’s future daughter in law is going to show us a range of Jamie Oliver cookware. All proceeds will go to Help for Hero’s. If this is successful I will organise others.
I am arranging an afternoon at Folkestone Races – Ladies Day. Basic cost £13.00 plus cost of Mini-bus. The more names we have the cheaper it will be, please let me know if you are interested ( list will close on Wed 25th May ).
Help the Heroes Club day, and Tony Roser is looking forward to the ladies participating in this fund raising day, I understand there will be refreshments and music in the evening – full details to follow on club notice board.
Club Captain’s day and once again the Ladies section has been invited to be involved , full details later on club notice board.
Ladies Day Out – after long deliberation I have opted to go slightly further afield to Eastwell Manor . Reasons - they offer a good day package rate of £25.00 that includes all day golf and a 2 course lunch in the Pavillion Restaurant. This means that you can play as little as 9 Holes( 2052 yds – parkland course ) or 36 if the mood takes you! Eastwell Manor is the home to Dreams Spa with its in-door and outdoor pools and a wide selection of Spa treatments for those who would rather be pampered than play golf or why not do both! prices from £70 (use of spa facilities and 2 course lunch treatments extra , list available in locker room.
Please put your name on list in locker room if you are interested.
A very special day in the calendar. To encourage more ladies and girls to take up the wonderful game of golf, I am arranging a ‘Learn to Play Day’. This has the full backing of Club Professionals present and past. This one off event will be to raise money for our local Hospice. So if you know anyone who would like to come along and see what fun we have, just let me know.
Helping hands from Ladies section would be most appreciated. Full details to follow shortly.
It came to my attention recently that since Jean Simpson has to spend more time caring for her sister who recently had a stroke, her dear friend Lily Butler (who has limited vision) has no one to play the occasional game of golf with. Could I please ask any lady who can spare the occasional couple of hours during the day to contact Lily to arrange a game . Her number is 833218. I know she will be delighted to hear from you.
At the recent committee meeting a suggestion was made that I wholeheartedly support, that we should have more ‘drawn’ matches. I know we all like to play with our friends, but there other considerations to be taken into account. By mixing everyone up it gives newer member the opportunity to play with those who are more experienced and thereby further their knowledge. And to long standing members it is an opportunity to find out more about other members and pass on the wealth of your experience. With this in mind it has been decided that for a trial period all Stableford competitions will be drawn. This affects the following date :-
27th July, 10th August, 31st August, 9th November and 14th December (Christmas Hamper).
Also discussed at the meeting – Extra Day Cards.
Extra cards can be used to affect your handicap. There will be an Extra Day Card Book in the locker room. It is essential that you complete the book with name/ date /time and sign before you go out.. Your card must be signed by a club member or someone with a recognised handicap and placed in wooden box.
Once you have signed the book, irrespective of standard of your game, the card must be submitted, it cannot be withdrawn. Likewise you cannot go out and play, realising you are getting a good score, then decide to enter the card part way through or at end of a game. Good luck.
As you know I not only chair our committee meetings but I also sit in at the Directors Meetings.
If you have any queries or suggestions regarding the Ladies Section or the Club in general, can I please ask you to address the matter in writing to myself or a committee member so that the issue can be dealt with in the correct manner.
Good luck to you all for a great summer of golf. Thank you for all for your support.
Sue Osborne, Your Lady Captain
